The referendum on gay marriage that will take place this year is already marked by solidarity. It’s a matter of human rights, not simply gay rights. Organisers said 8,000 people took part in the march, many of whom held signs reading “equal”. The march was colourful and marked by its number of straight people and familities marching alongside the LBGT community. Irish Times journalist Fintan O’Toole called for Irish society to replace “tolerance” of LGBT people with “citizenship”.
