Community spirit has always been a key trait of our culture with the vibrancy of the GAA being one of the more obvious examples of that culture in action. But decades of urbanisation, emigration, rural isolation, the demise of our towns, as well as the demanding pace of modern life have eroded community connections and belonging in its traditional sense. In its place, we have ever more connections of the virtual variety and are participants in myriad ‘communities’ often by our default actions, but sometimes by real connections, shared interests and a sense of belonging.
The Community Rising trend highlights the resurgence of that community spirit in our society.
